The Saloni 2013 is getting close. From April 9th to 14th Milan becomes the design capital more than ever; Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Euroluce/International Lighting Exhibition, SaloneUfficio/International Workspace Exhibition, International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, SaloneSatellite, and of course the Fourisaloni Milan Design Week; Ventura Lambrate, Zona Tortona, Triennale, Brera Design District and a really long etcetera. During this week design revolves all around the city.
But there is a place that you can’t miss if you go to Milan. It’s not only open during the Design Week, but it’s a must to go if you are in Milan, and if you are reading this maybe you will be. We are talking about the greatest master’s design studio, Achille Castiglioni. He was with undoubtedly one of the greatest designers. His objects stand as clear example of rigorous methods combined to get a rational and emotional beauty. I’m pretty sure Dieter Rams would say he is a good example of Good Design. His designs are full of simplicity, irony and fun, showing lots of interest on how objects are used. To talk about Castiglioni in design is like talking about Pelé about football; he is the master, everything is said and everybody knows it.
Unfortunately Castiglioni died in 2002, but not his spirit. Since 2006 his studio became a Museum, a place that runs a programme during the whole year and were you can also feel the whole world in which Achille Castiglioni has worked in for more than 60 years; his drawings, pictures, models, films, designs, etc. And of course his object collection, because he was an amazing collector of things too.
So, if in a month you are going to be in Milan, I really recommend you to get close to Piazza Castello and visit The Studio Museum Achille Castigione. The visit just takes about 60 minutes and a maximum of 20 people is allowed per tour.
I know almost everybody knows his work, but to conclude I would like to leave you here some of his exuberant work. I’ll see you in Milan.
